There are several ways that action can be captured in still photography. Motion of the subject, while the picture is being exposed, results in blurred images. This distortion can be used to highlight or emphasize the motion. In instances where subject detail is of interest the camera should follow the subject during the exposure. This will blur the background while the subject remains in un-(or sometimes less)-distorted. In instances where the background deserves emphasis the camera can be held steady as the subject passes in and through the field of view. This results in a clear view of the surroundings and a distorted, often very interesting, view of the subject. Often the distortion does a better job of telling the story than a clear view of the subject ever could. On the other hand, when the motion is familiar it is often more interesting to use a high shutter speed to freeze the motion in time.
